Primeras Miradas

All stories begin at a beginning, and the story of this project " Primeras Miradas " features Fausto, a young man from Camizungo (Luanda, Angola) to whom the NGO, Mundo Orenda , gave an analog camera in 2024.

Through photography, Fausto became a young documentary photographer who portrayed his community from an equal's perspective, without bias, overcoming the barrier of distance that usually exists between the photographer and the subject of the photograph.

From there the Primeras Miradas project was born , which aims to bring photography closer through introductory workshops on analog photography developed in the village of Camizungo and the Malange Angola Orphanage.

Thus, since 2025, training workshops in analog photography have been developed with the aim of introducing a group of young people to photography as a path towards a new language and a way of communicating with the rest of the world, placing their work at the antipodes of the colonialist gaze. In these workshops they explore their own artistic vision and awareness, acquiring the necessary knowledge to delve into and develop this artistic discipline according to their needs and concerns.

In July 2025 the first workshop took place , with Fausto, Maria, Tina and Batinho showing us powerful images, far from the clichés of photographs of animals and landscapes of Africa, of an unfiltered everyday life of these kids living in shacks and on streets full of garbage.

The images produced in this workshop are continuously available for purchase. This allows the participants to generate income, which is channeled through the NGO that runs the workshop ( Mundo Orenda ) and directly contributes to the photographers' academic training.

This project was started by my friend and colleague, photographer Noelia G. León, whom I joined to develop it. Its execution is being made possible thanks, of course, to the NGO Mundo Orenda and the sponsorship of Exposure Film Lab (Barcelona), Nada Carrete , La Peliculera , the analog photography blog Disparafilm , as well as numerous individuals.
